Our Doctors
Brian Barone
DVM
Dr. Brian Barone, a proud 2004 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, has dedicated his career to providing exceptional veterinary care. Born and raised in Azle, Texas, he gained invaluable experience working in mixed animal practices and emergency clinics before fulfilling his dream of returning to his hometown. In June 2014, he purchased Gieb Veterinary Clinic, now known as Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital, where he continues to serve the community with passion and commitment.
Melissa Bauer
DVM
Dr. Bauer, a 2016 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, brings a vibrant energy and enthusiasm to Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital. Known for her exemplary compassion and commitment to the highest standards of care, she has quickly become a favorite among clients and their pets. When she’s not at the clinic, Dr. Bauer enjoys hiking, jogging, and exploring with her two dogs, who are also experts at relaxing on the couch. She shares her home with two beloved cats, Stella and Favre, who undoubtedly run the household!
Our Staff
Lauren Hernandez
Lauren, a Texas native from Azle, graduated from Azle High School and went on to earn her degree from Sul Ross State University. With 15 years of teaching experience, she later transitioned into management, bringing her leadership skills to Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital. Married for 20 years to John, a dedicated TCU employee, she is a proud mother of two active boys, ages 10 and 16. When she’s not busy with family, Lauren enjoys reading, swimming, and cooking, and she shares her home with two dogs, Jengo and Ziggy, as well as her recently adopted kitten, Magnolia.
Kristina Caughey
As our lead technician at Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital, Kristina has been making a difference in the lives of animals since joining the veterinary field in 2009. With a focus on emergency and surgery specialties, she is dedicated to practicing exceptional medicine and compassion. In her free time, she enjoys the company of her pets—cats Kane and Jekyll, and dog Ripley—while also pursuing her passion for pet rescue and travel.
Kami Walden
Since January 2023, Kami has been a valued veterinary technician at Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital. With a degree in Veterinary Technology and a license from the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, she is excited to serve her hometown community. Kami is married and shares her life with three cats and a flock of spoiled chickens, demonstrating her lifelong passion for caring for animals.
Mason DeLong
Mason has been in the veterinary industry for about eight years, dedicating her skills to animal care. When she’s not at the clinic, she loves running with her four-legged companion, Goose, and exploring the outdoors with her partner, Dawson. Mason’s enthusiasm for animals and adventure shines through in both her professional and personal life.

Daniela Perez
Daniela studied Animal Science at West Texas A&M and is dedicated to advancing her career in veterinary medicine. After starting as a kennel technician at Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital, her exceptional skills and quiet confidence led her to transition into a Vet Assistant role. With a passion for learning and a handsome Turkish Angora named Rick O’Connell by her side, Daniela is honing her skills to become an outstanding Vet Technician.
Janet Steed
Since joining Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital in 2017, Janet has become a cherished member of our team. You can often find her beloved Black Labrador, Stetson, by her side at the reception desk, where they both appreciate the kindness from our clients. Janet values the relationships she’s built and loves assisting new pet owners with their care needs.
Shandel Miller
A recent transplant from Paradise, Shandel has a genuine love for animals and often goes out of her way to help strays. With a busy household filled with pets, she enjoys fostering bottle babies and has a passion for rodeos, barrel racing, and spending time at the lake with friends. Shandel’s versatility in the clinic makes her an invaluable part of the Walnut Creek team.
Cassidy Thomas
A native Texan from Azle, Cassidy holds an Associate’s Degree from Weatherford College and a Veterinary Assistant Certification from Animal Behavior College. Happily married to her husband Joshua, their family includes four dogs, three cats, and two bunnies. In her free time, Cassidy enjoys going to the movies, crafting, and cherishing moments with her furry companions.
